Short-Duration Gamma-Ray Bursts
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) display a bimodal duration distribution, with a separation between the shortand long-duration bursts at about 2 sec. The progenitors of long GRBs have been identified as massive stars based on their association with Type Ic core-collapse supernovae, their exclusive location in starforming galaxies, and their strong correlation with bright ultraviolet regions within their...
متن کاملObservational Prospects for Afterglows of Short Duration Gamma-ray Bursts
If the efficiency for producing γ-rays is the same in short duration (<∼ 2 s) Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) as in long duration GRBs, then the average kinetic energy of short GRBs must be ∼ 20 times less than that of long GRBs. Assuming further that the relativistic shocks in short and long duration GRBs have similar parameters, we show that the afterglows of short GRBs will be on average 10–40 times...
متن کاملMorphological properties of short duration gamma ray bursts
In this paper, we study a sample of 65 short duration bursts contained in the 3B catalogue. We fit the time profiles of these GRBs with lognormal functions and study various temporal properties. In most of the multi-peaked bursts, our analysis leads to a statistical evidence for the evolution of temporal asymmetry in individual pulses i.e. subsequent pulses in a GRB, on an average, tend to be m...
متن کاملShort-Hard Gamma-Ray Bursts
Two types of Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are observed: short duration hard spectrum GRBs and long duration soft spectrum GRBs. For many years long GRBs were the focus of intense research while the lack of observational data limited the study of short-hard GRBs (SHBs). In 2005 a breakthrough occurred following the first detections of SHB afterglows, longer wavelength emission that follows the burst ...
متن کاملThe Prompt Gamma-Ray and Afterglow Energies of Short-Duration Gamma-Ray Bursts
I present an analysis of the γ-ray and afterglow energies of the complete sample of 17 short-duration GRBs with prompt X-ray follow-up. I find that 80% of the bursts exhibit a linear correlation between their γ-ray fluence and the afterglow X-ray flux normalized to t = 1 d, a proxy for the kinetic energy of the blast wave (FX,1 ∝ F 1.01±0.09 γ ). An even tighter correlation is evident between E...
